Crowdfunding v. Fundraising

A lot of people don’t know the difference between crowdfunding and fundraising. Before starting this adventure, I didn’t. The two were a bit meddled up in my mind. Fundraising is giving money for a cause. You get the satisfaction of having done a good deed. It’s similar to giving money to a charity.

Crowdfunding on the other hand is more like micro funding but the benefits for the crowdfunders are much bigger. They get the satisfaction of having helped a project by helping in the raising of funds to make it happen. That’s brilliant in itself. That’s why people who launch crowdfunding campaigns have to “pitch”. The more people fund, the more it shows that there is a market for it. But pledging money towards the campaign gives more than that: the person who gives receives the product of the campaign ahead of everyone else.

In the case of a book, this means crowdfunders help bring a book to live. As I explained in one of my early blogs, bringing a book to professional level, actually costs a lot of money in editing, formatting, design, production and delivery. Not to mention that the author should also be paid for its work. This rarely happens. Not for a first book. Authors put a huge amount of time and effort into the promotion of their campaigns and this is what makes them attractive to the book industry. That is the reason why I have decided to crowd fund. I want to push myself to the next level. I want to rise above the crowd. But also, I want to create a tribe. A movement. And crowdfunding can raise your profile to do that in better ways than a normal book launch campaign can.

I see this as a win win for all my “backers”. My hope is that they will learn to see death in a new way and maybe even get rid of their fear of death for good. Fear might not seem such a big issue but it is actually at the root of a lot of the pain that we inflict on others. When we are fearful, we act irrationally and we usually hurt others. I want to help create peace on this earth. And I think eradicating the fear of death is a definite step on the path of peace.

I hope you will join me on this journey.

Thank you for reading this blog.
